Everybody says they offer great service...great value...great product!
article by Art Mathews

This is the mantra of most if not all small entrepreneurs that we have spoken with for the past couple of years. We have asked thousands of small entrepreneurs what makes them different from their competition, especially the larger competitors and the mega corporations that are in their business.

Without fail they have puffed out their chests and stated with complete confidence that their customers love them, their product and their service.  We asked these same entrepreneurs the following second level questions;

what exactly make your service better

how is your product better

why do your customers love you

Only a small percentage of astute entrepreneurs had a well thought out answer based on some basic market research and business acumen.

No one is disputing that the next couple of years in South Florida are going to be tough and that business is going to be slower this year. This means that to stay the same size and make the same money as last year you need to own a bigger piece of a shrinking pie! You will have large and small competitors getting scared and discounting prices, offering more value without charging more or possibly dumping their product or service just to get some money out of their inventory. Corporate America understands this situation and you will see them begin to consolidate with competitors so they can grow their piece of the pie and cut out un-needed overhead or pull out of the market all together.

This is happening in the financial market as we speak, Merrill Lynch is forcing people out by not offering them bonuses like they have become accustomed to (too bad for these spoiled crybabies), Bank of America is taking over Countrywide, Starbucks is going to close non-performing stores, Washington Mutual has closed their mortgage stores and may be taken over this year by one of the larger wall street firms.

You may be thinking that this is the financial market, however the effect of thousands of people not making money or not having jobs is that many of these people will become consultants, insurance sales people, credit counselors, collectors, franchise owners, retail store owners, restaurant owners, wholesalers, distributors, DJ's, and anything else they feel they can do to make money. If you are in a business that makes money, you will find a whole new set of competitors entering your market within the next 12-18 months.

What does this mean, it means that you must quantify and qualify your value to your customers and prospects. I recently spoke to the owners of a variety of businesses, below are my observations and hopefully you can identify with them and change or be happy that you have more defined benefits:

a computer service business owner stated to a group that he helps small businesses with their technology needs. He did not have an understanding of document imaging, OCR, VOIP and he was just learning about Vista. His recommendations showed that this company did not understand the technology that entrepreneurs needed to run and grow their business

a networking group that was deciding if they should stay together asked what they could do to grow their group. If they don't know if they are going to stay together then why would anyone join their group. While discussing if they should stay together they could not come to any agreement on why they only were getting 30% attendance... maybe they offered no real value!

a web designer that creates sites for small businesses is looking for customers that want an inexpensive, qualify web site for around $1,000. When we asked what a quality site means, she said it varies, just like what she means by around $1,000. Oh yea! she said that she just left her corporate job as a marketing executive and that gives her a unique value over her competitors (her and 1,000 other ex-marketing people)

What can you do?

Write out why you are better, why your product or service is better, why your customers stay with your company.

Once you write it out, take it with you on your next sales call and see if you are saying to others what you feel are your value statements!

Ask your customers to state your value to them is specific terms

Make sure your literature is consistent with your value statements

Ask yourself if these benefits and value statements are enough to keep your business growing or stable during the next two to three years

I would like to hear what your unique selling proposition is. I would also like to hear about any companies that know their specific value statements, even if it is not your company, just add your comments to this blog.

by Marc Gilenson
    Managing Editor

Most Entrepreneurs go through their day without thinking about legal services. Most entrepreneurs think more about marketing, sales, raising money, hiring people, and paying their bills, not about protecting themselves legally.

Entrepreneurs may hate to pay for insurance, but they understand the need and will seek out an insurance agent and pay for the peace of mind that comes with it.

The following 7 reasons are just the major reasons that entrepreneurs need legal services:

review office rental/purchase contracts

development of non-compete clauses to their hiring agreement

client contracts review

collections letters

personal injury/property damage collection

There are many more reasons why an entrepreneur would need to retain legal services, however based on an informal study conducted by the Sales & Management Group the seven reasons mentioned above are the most common.

One problem has always been the expense of hiring a lawyer, not to mention knowing if they are any good. Have you ever tried to call a lawyer and get some free advice? The response is most often, they can't give legal advice to people that are not their clients... O.K. ask them what it takes to be their client and after they pick you off the floor from price shock, you feel exposed and helpless, leading to you retaining the attorney!

Even when you know and trust a lawyer, you may find that they have to refer you to another lawyer that handles what you need done. More time wasted trying to verify that the new lawyer can handle what you need, or yea... don't forget the retainer just to ask questions.

Corporate America has known that most entrepreneurs can't afford or don't understand the reason for retaining lawyers, this is why they constantly abuse entrepreneurs with the threat of legal action. Did you ever wonder why every large corporation has a law firm on retainer, and most have legal departments. When your customer or prospect sends your contract to their legal department...who do you send it too!

There are options for entrepreneurs. According to Harvey Brown (hlb@prepaidlegal.com), an independent associate of Pre-Paid Legal Services, states that "hundreds of South Florida entrepreneurs have the leveled the playing field by joining Pre-Paid Legal Services. For an investment as low as $75 per month local entrepreneurs have access to one of the largest law firms in South Florida. For this small monthly investment entreprenerus have the ability to have unlimited phone consultation, review of contracts, support with human resource legal issues, collections, and of course personal injury/property damage issues entrepreneurs can have the legal services they need."

Many lawyers will cringe when you mention Pre-Paid Legal Services and find a million reasons why this type of legal protection is not good for entrepreneurs. I have found that Pre-Paid Legal Service to be very effective and efficient for myself and many of my clients. I believe that the reason so many lawyers are not happy with Pre-Paid Legal Services becoming so popular in South Florida is that they realize they can't compete. This is not to say that Pre-Paid is the only solution, if you find a quality lawyer or firm, then
by all means use them to protect you and your business.

Whether you use Harvey Brown and Pre-Paid or one of the thousands of other quality lawyers in South Florida, entrepreneurs need to have legal resentation before they need a lawyer.

All of our columns are blogs, so if you are an entrepreneur and want to tell us your legal dilemna, just do it!

Most Entrepreneurs go through their day without thinking about legal services. Most entrepreneurs think more about marketing, sales, raising money, hiring people, and paying their bills, not about protecting themselves legally.

Time to increase your activity while your competition sleeps!

Floridians use to look at the summer time as vacation time. If you owned a business in Florida you would close up and wait until tourist season came back. Retailers would stop advertising, restaurants would close up and the owners would open their summer business up north. Those few people that worked outside the tourism industry would know that the roads and movie theaters would be empty.

Well, that’s not how Florida operates today. We are a year round business environment that is thriving during the summer months. Our population has skyrocketed and the number of people working in the tourism industry does not make up the majority of our economy any more. We have grown up and it is time to acknowledge it.
This means that local businesses must continue to advertise; they must continue to network, they must continue to cold call and they must continue to grow their business. Many organizations used to limit their networking events or cancel them altogether, not any more.

Sure, lots of decision makers take their vacations during the summer, however that does not mean you can develop more business. It means you need to work harder and smarter than usual in order to take business from your competitors.

Summer Time Action List

Put together your summer time action list now. A summer time action list is the actions and activities your will do during the summer that will continue to grow your business:

• Create a summer business plan – this plan should consist of all the projects you don’t have the time to complete during the busy season. It may include getting all your contacts into your contact management system, or developing that media kit you have been working on, or even conducting that sales training you never seem to get around to doing. Don’t limit the items, list everything you have been wanting to do or have started but have not finished.

• Identify what will help you the most – once you have your list, you must identify which projects will help you the most.

You should use the following criteria for making these decisions:
1. Will this project by itself solve one of my biggest issues or increase business substantially
2. Do we have the resources to make complete this project during the summer months
3. Will it cause disruption to our regular business
4. Is this the best time to complete the project
5. How will we measure success

• Create a basic project plan – during the summer, even you and your employees take time to go on vacation, so use the project plan to make sure all the resources required to complete the project will be available when you need them. Your project plan can be as simple as listing the tasks, related tasks, resources required, start and finish dates, time required and person the task is assigned to.
• Take action – seems obvious, however this is the one step that is often overlooked. Hard to believe, however many companies like to plan and plan and plan, they just find one excuse after another why they don’t implement the plan.

You Competition Is Probably On Vacation

No, not all your competition. They may still be in town, however they expect the summer to be slow and they aren’t paying attention to you or the fact that you are advertising more, networking more and selling more. This is the perfect time to let your customers know that you are serious about business and that you are here year round to service them.

The networking events you attend will be with other businesses that are working through the summer and they will enjoy working with companies that are working as hard as they are.
You competition may not run their advertisement in the summer, leaving more room for your ad to stick out and stick in your prospects minds. There is less direct mail, there is less telemarketing, and there is less cold calling. This means that your increased efforts will have a much greater impact on your prospects.

Other Dedicated Businesses Like Yours

If you are still out there doing business this summer take the time to respond to this blog and let us and the other 4,000 entrepreneurs that visit mybizuniverse.com each month that you are dedicated just like them.

Please tell us your company name, type of business and what you are doing during the summer.

So as you can see, Scott has identified the following reasons why a current member should refer ITEX:
